How to Become a Mentor:

Step 1: Apply
To apply to be a Community-Based mentor, CLICK HERE to complete an application. Once we receive your application, a Match Support Specialist will be assigned to help you with the rest of the process.

Step 2: Schedule Training
All volunteers are required to attend volunteer training to learn more about Big Brothers Big Sisters before acceptance as a Big.

Step 3: Schedule Interview
Once you apply, a Match Support Specialist will reach out to schedule an in-person interview. Prior to scheduling, all volunteers are required to complete their Child Abuse History Clearance, Criminal Record Check, and FBI Fingerprints. We will share more information on each of these background checks.

Step 4: Get Matched
Following the completion of your interview, training, background checks, and references, your file will be reviewed for approval. Matches are made based on shared interests, proximity, and preferences. A Match Support Specialist will reach out to you when a match is found.

 

Volunteer Eligibility:

  • Must be at least eighteen (18) years of age at the time of inquiry.
  • Must have access to a vehicle, proof of a valid Pennsylvania driver's license, and proper insurance liability coverage.
  • Must demonstrate reasonable stability in his/her home life.
  • Must have appropriate motivation for service.
  • Must be dependable, flexible, and display a willingness to cooperate with various family situations.
  • Must be capable of making a minimum commitment of one year.
  • Must have the interest and ability to work with children and be respectful of the safety of children.
  • Must demonstrate a stable vocational position such as employment, school, and/or homemaking.
  • Must demonstrate appropriate social adjustment, including the maintaining of meaningful peer relationships.
  • Must demonstrate a willingness to follow program policies and procedures and to cooperate with program staff.

 

Volunteer Requirements:

  • Must complete assessment process.
  • Must meet with Little a minimum of one hour per week.
  • Must make a one-year commitment to Big Brothers Big Sisters of Family Services of NW PA.

 

Automobile Insurance Requirements:

Big Brothers Big Sisters of Family Services of NW PA requires that each volunteer maintain the following minimum personal automobile insurance:

  1. At least $100,000/$300,000 bodily injury
  2. $50,000 property damage (OR)
  3. $300,000 combined single limit
