Outpatient Therapy is a service offered through the Center for Counseling and Wellness at Family Services of NW PA that helps individuals, couples, and families with a variety of issues. Referrals are accepted for adults and children four (4) years and older.

Outpatient Therapy helps individuals, couples, and families with a variety of issues, including:

  • Relationship Concerns
  • Parenting Challenges
  • Adjustment Issues
  • Depression
  • Anxiety
  • Anger Management

Services are designed to help individuals, couples, and families improve personal and professional relationships, recover from trauma and loss, and adjust to life challenges and major transitions.

The Center for Counseling and Wellness is staffed by a board-certified psychiatrist, certified registered nurse practitioner (CRNP), nurse, master level therapists, and licensed clinicians.

Outpatient Therapy is available in Erie County at our main office at 5100 Peach Street.

Trauma-Focused Therapy for All Ages:

Professionals at the Center for Counseling and Wellness specialize in treating trauma throughout the lifespan by using Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT) for youth and Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT) for adults.

Trauma-Focused Therapy teaches:

  • Methods to manage common reactions, painful feelings, thoughts and behaviors
  • Skills to enhance family communication and interaction
  • Effective strategies to heal

Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy

Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT) is an evidence-based intervention that helps children, and their caregivers overcome the negative effects of traumatic life events such as:

  • Loss of a loved one
  • Accidents, disasters or fires Domestic/community violence
  • Bullying
  • Physical, sexual, or emotional abuse
  • Life-threatening illness or injury

TF-CBT teaches methods to manage common reactions, painful feelings, thoughts and behaviors, skills to enhance family communication and interaction, and effective strategies to heal. The goal is to integrate traumatic experiences so that traumatic stress no longer interferes with daily life.

Cognitive Processing Therapy

Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT) is an evidence-based intervention that is effective in reducing symptoms of PTSD that have developed after experiencing a variety of traumatic events including child abuse, combat, rape and natural disasters.

CPT helps patients recognize negative thoughts that are created by trauma and works by teaching how to consider new, balanced perspectives.

CPT has four main parts:

  • Education about PTSD and CPT
  • Processing trauma
  • Learning to challenge thoughts about trauma
  • Trauma themes

Referrals:

All referrals to the Center for Counseling and Wellness must first schedule an intake and assessment appointment with a clinic therapist to determine whether Outpatient Therapy, Drug and Alcohol Treatment, or Psychiatric Services are most appropriate.

Telehealth options are available on a case-by-case basis.
