Position: Career Specialist, Independent Living Program
Reports To: Supervisor, Independent Living Program
Pay Rate: $32,662.50 annual salary

$2,000 Sign-On Bonus*
*$500 at 90 days, $500 at 180 days and $1,000 at 1 year

POSITION SUMMARY:
The Career Specialist for the Independent Living Program works with Indepdendent Living Program (ILP) clients to develop career awareness, help determine career paths, and determine which avenues will help them to achieve their career goals. The worker will also build relationships and interact closely with community partners, in order to be able to provide ILP clients with job shadowing experiences, internships, employment opportunities, etc. Good written and verbal communication skills are necessary. Daytime and considerable evening work, possible weekend work, and driving to the service areas is required.  Reliable transportation required for extensive travel through Erie County.

JOB DUTIES:

  • Completes vocational assessments and career plans with clients
  • Facilitates life skills groups that will introduce clients to community resources, teach necessary soft and hard skills, etc.
  • Assists youth with career-oriented employment searches, filling out job applications, and practicing mock interviews.
  • Researches and builds strong relationships with buesses, training programs, community colleges, trade schools/programs and other community resources who ILP can partner with to help better serve our youth.
  • Plans and executes job shadowing and internship opportunities for ILP clients
  • Assists with referrals to community resources and provides advocacy for youth to ensure that they recieve proper services. Provide support that will enable you to advocate on their own behalf.
  • Maintains excellent communitycation with the youths ILP case manager regarding youth progress as well as available resources.
  • Plans and facilitates career-related group learning opportunities such as Youth Media Development groups, functions, and projects, in order to expose youth to possible career paths.
  • Provides transportation for youth, as needed.
  • Electronically documents daily service activity to maintain proper case records.
  • Provides clients with guidance, counseling and preparation for independence with appropriate assertiveness, professionalism, and positive rapport.
  • Demonstrates coordination skills while working with family, staff, and other agency personnel.
  • Participates in individual, team and overall agency supervisory and staff development activities
  • Professionally represents the program and agency in meetings, public forums and court appearances, as required.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Bachelors degree in human services required and previous experience, preferred. 
  • Must have a valid driver's license and access to reliable transportation.
