Trauma Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy is an evidence based practice created to help children and their caregivers overcome the negative effects of traumatic life events such as sudden and unexpected loss of a loved one, accidents, disasters, fires, domestic violence, community violence, physical, sexual and/or emotional abuse, life threatening illness/injury and bullying
The goal of TF-CBT is to help address the unique needs of children with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) or other problems related to traumatic life experiences. Children and parents are provided knowledge and skills related to processing the trauma; managing distressing thoughts, feelings, and behaviors; and enhancing safety, parenting skills, and family communication. TF-CBT is a short-term treatment that involves individual sessions with the child and parent as well as joint parent-child sessions. Sessions typically occur in the office and are provided by master’s level licensed therapists.
